Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the growth rate of local recurred hepatocelluar carcinomas (HCCs) that developed after percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) at serial follow-up CT examination.
Materials and methods: Eleven local recurred HCCs appearing in 171 patinets who underwent follow-up multiphase CT after percutaneous RFA were retrospectively indentified. The volume of the local recurred HCCs at follow-up CT was measured on a PACS monitor by using an area measured tool and summation-of-area technique. We calculated the tumor volume doubling time (TVDT) and tumor diameter doubling time (TDDT). The growth rate was represented by the TVDT.
Results: Mean baseline and follow-up tumor volume were 372 mm3 (range:119 mm3~2,867 mm3) and 1971 mm3 (range: 556~9,751 mm3), retrospectively. Mean baseline and follow-up tumor diameters were 7.9 mm (range: 5.0~14.7 mm) and 14.7 mm(range: 10.5~25.6 mm), retrosplectively. Mean TVDT and TDDT were 89days (range: 25~176days) and 212days (range: 64~771days), retrospectively.
Conclusion: The growth rate of local recurred HCCs after percutaneous RFA was higher than those reported in natural outcome studies with untreated HCCs. The results of our study suggest that a new guideline about follow-up interval for imaging is needed.
